I am an elementary art teacher with 20+ yrs. exp. Recently our school
system has been exploring assessment tools for the arts. I consider our
elementary art program to be very minimal. The students have art twice a
month for an hour-would like to know how that compares to your programs.
We try to work in various media and introduce artists, criticism and a
little writing. I have a computer in one classroom and it is used as a
teaching resource as well as students using it. Many neighboring school
systems have no art programs at all.
I have seen students 9 times by the time I am expected to "grade" them
at semester. We use V-S-N. No one gets an N. I recognize consistently
superior work with a V. I agree that is not great but would like to know
what other methods are being employed by you - art teachers in the
field. I will take these results to my Curriculum supervisor. Thanks. I
have 960 students that I see every other week for 1 hour. $ is good,
good community, very supportive of the arts.
