Hi...One lesson that I have always loved and that truly involves and excites
students is the study of after-images. I begin with a review of the color
wheel and vocabulary....complementary colors discussed in various art works
....then an explanation of after-images...Have the kids gather round in good
view of the board where I post a red square onto a black background....a
white background next to it....tell them to stare for apx. 30-40 seconds at
the center of the red square and then change their gaze to the white
paper...it ALWAYS gets their interest...after a few more experiments they
return back to their seats to create objects colored in their complements
rather than their natural color ...an 8-1/2 by 11 white piece of paper folded
in half is used for the assignment...Eric Carle recently published a new
children's book called Hello Mr. Fox and uses after images throughout the
whole picture book....Carol
