I am 2 weeks into my first teaching experience with 7th and 8th graders. I
see them 4 days a week for 9 weeks, and then not again until they possibly
elect to take art at the high school level. I have been working with line,
teaching them that line expresses emotion and that artists use line to
define objects, ex. contour drawing, gesture drawing etc. They are slowly
coming around, but it has been difficult to really excite or motivate them.
Their attitude seems to be very negative and many express quite frequently,
"I can't do that." I am sending out a plea for help to those of you that
have taught this age level. Are there any ideas for lessons that might
really grab them ( doesn't have to deal with line), that perhaps would be
more meaningful to them than what I have presented thus far? I still want
to structure my curriculum around the design elements and principles,
however, I am open to all suggestions! Thanks,Marian
