"It's Cute"

May I vent?
As we are approaching an open house at one of my schools soon, I was in
the hallway after school putting up a display of 3rd grade drawings
inspired by Picasso. A mother stopped by, looked at the artwork and cooed,
"It's cute." ARGH! I've heard this plenty of times through the years and
usually let it go or try to make a point positively about the kids' efforts
and the lesson--depending on the person and the situation.
Today I answered, "I was hoping for more than cute. The kids learned a
lot and worked very hard."
She looked it over, shook her head, and said, "No. It's just cute."
AUGH! Then she waved her hands expansively and said, "So what WERE they
doing?" I explained Picasso and swallowed some inappropriate responses.
It's as many have pointed out on this listserv recently--We do have to
help educate parents and promote art education.
Part of me wanted to say what my daughter(12) said at dinner when I told
what the woman had said. "DUH!"
Also, we can laugh at ourselves. After this encounter, I told the
principal and a 2nd grade teacher about it. Upon hearing the word "cute"
they both immediately said, "Uh-oh." I guess I've made my point known
before! :-)
Thanks all!
