Written for Education of the Exceptional Child; Lesson 9: The Gifted
~~~~~~~~~~~
All You'll Ever Need to Know About Raising (teaching!) Teenagers
My children are grown;
I'm an expert --at last!
Three rules, as a parent,
I've held hard and fast.
Let go of the apron strings.
Give them a gentle tug.
Hang on for dear life.
These commandments are simple;
There's no need for ten--
You just must decide
Which rule applies when.
Addendum for Chris
I taught a child today
whose hand must be held
to keep mind and body
from spinning
in self-absorbing circles.
Most children cast off
the apron strings
as they find themselves.
For Chris, they are lifelines
giving him a tenuous link
with a reluctant reality.
