Sometimes I find it interesting to have the students critique something other
than a piece of traditional two or three dimensional art. I inform the
students they make the same aesthetic decisions when choosing most things
they purchase--clothes, cars, CDs, posters, etc., or for that matter when
choosing or meeting new friends. They use the same or similar four critique
steps in the process--describe, analyze, interpret, and judgment. Add a
different twist and have the class "critique" ad photos of new cars--or some
item that they are very interested in.
