I teach drawing to middle school art students. I've thought for years
that I spend more time teaching them how to think visually. Learning to
see relationships , relative sizes, positions, etc. I do this exercise
with the kids where they draw a design using symbols...arrows, stars,
etc. something they can draw almost without thinking, almost like the
pos/neg space exercise in Betty Edwards book. They then have to make a
copy on a different size paper with the same proportions. I tell them to
pretend they are in a different room than I am. They need to tell me how
to draw the design on my paper, exactly as it appears in front of them.
We discuss how inches and feet are useless, all descriptions of position
and size must be relative. I begin by pointing out that both our papers
have edges(parallel) and corners that can be used to locate and describe
points and lines. We talk about becoming aware of how we think when
drawing. I relate it to playing an instrument and learning FACE and
EGBDF, then learning the correct hand positions on the instrument.
Learning to draw is like playing that instrument. With practice you no
longer have to name the notes, think of the hand positions and play the
note. It becomes "automatic".
