I teach k-6, each for 45 minutes. K and 1 are a problem in terms of time. 45
minutes is too long for a single project, its true. I connect the project
with a story which I read at the beginning of class. They come and sit on the
floor. It tends to calm them down as well. Painting and drawing fish? I read
"Fish is Fish" by Leo Lionni. Talking about color? I read "The Great
Grayness..." Each assignment is connected to a story. Now by this I don't
mean that each activity ends of being an illustration of a story. Just some
common themes. I like it. The children like it. And classroom teachers have
begun talking about my "literature-based art curriculum." Everything in
education has more importance, it seems, when you give it a hypenated term.
