I play music in my classroom. The music is my choice. I play music from other
countries by present day groups or folk music. I have music from Peru,
Scotland, Ireland, Africa, Mexico, etc. I also play Jazz, Ragtime, Big Band,
Native American flute and percussion, etc. Sometimes we play "classical"
music, current favorites or classic rock n' roll. My main objective is to
introduce them to a wide variety of music. I also hope to eradicate two
misconceptions: If it is "classical" it is boring and "classical" music is
the only intellectual music. And since it is my choice there is no time
wasted on arguing about what will be played. Frequently the music will lead
to some interesting discussions. And of course teasing the teacher is
frequently engaged in. But they are gentle.
