Isn't it amazing how we can recall every twitch and spasm and the little
beads of sweat rolling down our sides during critiques in college. They
were so important to us and we were unsure. I almost died with each one
because in Calif. you had to have a regular degree and then a 5th year for
educ. classes and since I needed a studio class, the MFA program had to
allow me into the painting studio. Boy, talk about being the mud
underneath their feet. Each and every one from the professor on down
leered at me and my work, and skipped my paintings if they felt short of
time. I think that is why I can't stand to do critiques with my students.
Jr. high is such a critical time anyway and they can be so nasty to each
other. My biggest fear is that I will walk on to a work and won't be able
to find anything good to say about it myself. I try to walk around and
give little critiques to the students privately, but I can't stand to do
group sessions.Sid
