Block affects on Art?

I am wondering of the affects I can expect with our 4x4 block schedule
coming next year.
currently we have a 6 hour day. We have:

Art 1 (one semester) Art 2 (following semester) Three sections
Studio 1 2 and Independent study combined full year Two sections
This works well because our school is small.

What do I do about portfolio development?
What classes should I suggest when rescheduling?
What do I do about competitions, shows etc?
Can I see the same group of students like I do now?
I think we have one of the finest developed progressions at this point
so I am scared when I won't have the continuous contact with the same
art students.
