Got this from one of my old curriculum guides:
"If tempera has a tendency to spoil or have an odor, the following
preservatives may be added: oil of wintergreen, oil of cloves, benzoate of
soda, bath salts, formaldehyde (??!!), table salt, soap or cleanser such as
409, alcohol."
