National standards in arts education is really a case of being careful of
what you ask for... you might just get it. In all the discussion here about
what art is, we ought to include some thought about it being among other
things, local , culturally defined, situational, momentary and all the things
that fly in the face of anything that might be national and having national

Our "national culture" is unique in that it is both American and not. This is
complex, and not at all helped by those who want to melt it into a pot, label
it and define it with standards.

And who does it help? Art teachers in the classroom must deal with those
children, sitting there, not some "national" ones. Are we concerned with
"dumbing down?" Well, have we ever seen natioanl standards that were aimed at
anything other than lowest common denominator stuff. Have these standards
ever been examples of what any of us would define as "standards of
excellence." Never.
