Re: Computer integration in art class

I've just put together a computer graphics course for the high school level
(12 students using 4 Mac computers) and will share a couple of things that
I believe will help lead to success.

First of all, while some of the graphics programs can do really neat things
like multi-colored gradations or textures like marble, etc., I think it's
also valuable for students to learn how to control the technology and make
it do what they, as student artists, want, rather than just use the
pre-created designs and patterns. So for my first high school class (but I
could see doing this on an elementary level too) I had them use a ruler to
divide a piece of typing paper into 1/4's, then I asked them to draw, in
one of the sections, an arrangement of 3 geometric and 3 organic shapes and
color them in with markers. Then I demonstrated on the computer how to
access the rulers and divide the computer "page" into 1/4's and how to use
the various drawing and painting tools and I asked my students to recreate
the same simple design they did with markers, only using the computer. With
my 12 students, I asked the more experienced ones to go first while 2
others sat with them and watched. After they recreated their original
design they were shown how to selet, copy and paste it into into the other
3 empty sections of their paper and they were to make alterations and
modifications to the 3 copied designs. But I made sure all 12 students got
to do the single design first, before any proceeded with the copy and
modify part. It was really fun to watch them teach each other as well as
discover for themselves all the various things the graphics program could
do. I've designed another practice type activity like this involving fonts
and lettering too. To conclude this introductory unit I'm asking them each
to bring in a logo they find interesting - could be a sports team, product,
company, TV station, musical group, etc. I'm going to ask them to recreate
it on the computer only they have to substitute in their own name or
initials. Because I have only 1 color printer and limited ink supplies, we
are not even printing out any of these projects at this time. I gave each
student a disk and when it's time to grade work I will just view their
disks one at a time. I may also import examples of their work into a
presentation program and put on a "slide show" so they can all see what
each other have produced.
