The National Building Museum In Washington DC is an EXCELLENT resource. As
is your local architect.
Otis was the inventor of elevators.... look for info under that name.
Sky Scrapers had their roots in the Chicago School, Richardson and Sullivan
are a few names that come to mind.
I still use an old text book from the 70's:
