We have had a group of 4-5 grade students in the "Art Squad" for several
years now. They have done many projects that they chose to, and hosted art
shows... "loans" from the AZ Commission on the Arts that we had to raise $
for. The students then acted as curators and docents for the shows... it is
a real experience for a 5th grader to explain the artwork to a visiting 8th
grader:)

We have taken long and short trips. I am now definitey in favor of one day,
low budget "field experience" painting activities vs. the headache of
overnight stays in a city to visit museums and galleries. The neat thing
about our local trips is the fact that local artists come along and work
with a small group of students. The students produce awesome stuff and
learn in an almost one-one setting with an artist. Of course, living 20
miles from Monument Valley is an advantage here:)

On our last trip we integrated environmental studies, art and technology
into the experience by taking a few laptops and a Quicktake Camera. The
students also wrote poetry after the trip. Our site was an old dump
overlooking Monument Valley. (I am working on a web page about this to
share).

Hope this plants some seeds of ideas for you!
