I did a high school art assignment based on a similar idea
It was basically to have students design a garden ornament
which would have some special powers for its owner from bringing
good luck to keeping evil from the premises..
It was designed to make students really stretch their imaginations.
They first had to write a written description of the creature and
describe it in as much detail as possible. They then had to tell
where it came from or how it came into being (mythology like
stories) what its powers were and under what circumstances.
I had some very heavy cardboard that was donated to the school.
Their creations were to be at least three feet tall and drawn and
painted on both sides in acrylic.
I did this as an end of the year project and thought it would be neat
to place these in the garden in front of the school for the summer.
Some of the students stories were tremendously creative and funny.
Some even asked what writing had to do with art which was very
revealing in itself.
