We use our sketchbooks A LOT -- warm up drawings, idea generating, thumbnail sketches, media practice and techniques, skill building exercises, weekly homework drawings, etc. My 8th graders will be doing more of a visual journal.
I try to help them see the connection to how and why other artists use their sketchbooks. One resource:
