When using magazines with students, it is important to " CYA", by mentioning
that there could be questionable content in some of the magazines. There is
no way you could censor all of them. As an adult, I am often shocked at the
content of magazines that I consider wholesome, family magazines!!
I tell my middle schoolers that I know they are mature enough to ignore any
questionable content and or pictures that are not appropriate for school.. I
tell them that our magazines are a great resource, but if anyone is so
inclined to point out, joke, giggle, or show off those things that may be
offensive, we will no longer be able to use them. I also offer to select a special
set of magazines for anyone who feels that they may become offended. (No one
has ever taken me up on this!!)
This seems to nip it in the bud, even with middle schoolers!! And should I
get a parent phone call, my bases are covered!
