Try explaining (and demonstrating using your voice and drawing a line)
that a dark line is like a SHOUT and a light line is like a whisper.
Encourage "whisper lines"...and use an H pencil or HB at the softest.
You will still have some that have difficulty, but it does seems to help
a bit and certainly gives you a reference when you remind them to
"whisper".
