Re: [teacherartexchange] [teacherartexchange tons of questions

Thanks. I did start the bucks today. I just handed them out to the students
who were working very quietly. I explained that when they get four, they can
pick out a little something. I told them that I won't always give them, that
it will be random, when I feel like it, when I notice that they are doing
something extra good. My 7th/8th grade class was working so nicely today that I
gave about 20 bucks out! I ran out! And that was without them even knowing
that I had them. Of course 6 of them were out, which makes a big difference
because it dropped my class down to 28 students. I'm still having problems with
the sixth grade, and I have to give out two detentions tomorrow to students
who didn't bring back a note signed by a parent. These will be my first
detentions, but maybe they will realize that I can follow through. It breaks my
heart though. I'm afraid that the one boy will cry, but I keep telling myself
that he made his choice, not me.

I have started writing "NOISE" on the board again. I used to tell them that
if they lost the "s" and "e" they had to have silent art, and if they lost the
"i" there would be no art. Now I've told them that if I have to warn three
times that they are being too loud, and they lose the "ise," we will pack up
and put our heads down. They lost the "SE" today. I was just about to erase
the "I" and they shaped up. "Silent Art" simply doesn't work, so I'm done with
that. Either they whisper or they don't do art, plain and simple.

We'll see. I'm making small changes, and I know I'll need to make a bunch
more to before I even get close to having my class the way it should be. I do
have that book by Jones and just started reading it over the weekend. Maybe
I'll get some extra tips. I wish I could just pop in an art DVD, but
unfortunately, you have to sign up and schedule a tv. We only have a few at the school
and all must share. It kind of sucks. If I start running out of goodies too
quickly, I might need to adjust my incentives as well. Maybe I could send
nice notes home or give little art awards instead. We'll see how it goes.
