Stacie,
Honestly, I don't know if it can really be pulled off below 9th grade. I give
7 and 8th grade sketchbook homework and it's nothing like this. I also have
trouble getting it from 8th graders. I just gave out my famous design your own
CD and I got probably 80% back. other assignments it's much less. It seems the
idea of keeping a personal sketch diary/journal really hits home when they're
a little older. My collegue, after seeing me use smaller books for my ninths,
started using smaller books for her 7th graders. I think for all grades, that
having a smaller page to fill sometimes makes it easier. These journals are
about 5 1/2 by 8 1/2.
   Check my last couple of posts on the list. I show techniques only and
subject matter is usually free.
