I'm probably the last person who should give advice, but I just started doing
something new with my students. This is my first year, and I teach grades 3
to 8. After going crazy during cleanup with ALL of my students, I now have
assigned table captains for each table of four students. I have explained that
no student may get up without permission. During cleanup, the captain is
responsible for getting his or her table to clean up. The first table that is
sitting quietly, hands folded with their basket of supplies ready for
"inspection" is the first table that will get to line up. I inspect each basket to make
sure the supplies are in order and then tell the captain to put up the basket
and that his or her table may line up. So far it is working so much better!
It works with third graders, but I don't know about first. Good luck.
