Marcia-- I have 32 year-long 8th grade art students this year. Last year I had 34--35 at a time (8th grade)for 9 weeks a whack. Because they were computer-scheduled, I had kids who weren't interested, but that was the primary problem. In terms of materials distribution, I got nine large bins, one per table, and put 3 to 4 manilla envelopes, one per student, for pencils, erasers, and completed proejcts. When we had special projects, like painting, ice-cube palattes were stored on one shelf. First kid at a table got the bin, the second kid got acrylics and so-on. Clean-up was a lesson in choreography. I would announce a table at a time to put up things, or to dump water, etc. It actually got pretty funny, because I felt like I was conducting a huge orchestra. When kids (usually at the start of the 9 weeks) got out of control during this process, I made everybody sit down. Instsead of kids cleaning their own paint brushes (I had 3 sinks, but not enough time!) I had them placed in a bucket with just enough brush cleaning solution and water to cover bristles.. IMMEDIATELY after class I washed, rinsed and pointed. I also assigned each kid at a table a specific project--throwing away newspaper, putting up bins, putting up paintings-in-progress, etc. It helps if you have an ELMO and t.v. monitor for demonstrations. I used overhead projectors for drawing tips, note-taking, etc. I also asked my principal to observe the class during painting. She was impressed with how smoothly the class ran, and that's what decided this year's oh-so-heavenly status. E-mail me off list for any other help I can be. >>>> I have my largest class so far.. there are 30 bodies in my room (including me) in one of my classes. It feels really crowded since these are big 8th graders. Do you have any tips for me to keep the class under control with such a large size? I feel like I can't see all of them all the time.
