how you phrase things

Hi Susan,
I might be going to the National Convention. I'm hoping to get Sandy Bacon (from our list) to go with me.
I would love to see you again. We DO teach alike. I always, always read your letters because we they make my day.
I love how you tell the parents that you just love their child but don't want to play favorites and give him/her special priveleges. That's a hoot!
Here's my latest favorite thing to say to a student who misbehaves in class and needs to be moved to a new seat:
"I'm moving you to the _____ table so you can be with kids who won't distract you from your work. These children are really hard workers and now you can be part of their team."

  Here's my routine for elementary 40 min. sessions each class once a week: Students file in and sit pretzel-style, 5-in-a-row on the "Magic Carpet", a very large area rug on the side of my room. We discuss the day's lesson.(5-10 min) Next, everyone gathers around the Demonstration Table- I have one in the center of the kids' horseshoe shaped work tables. We all say together and do this," Hands by my side, and one step back. Freeze, please." The older kids have their own version-rap style and take turns leading it rap style! I don't care how they say it as long as they are SILENT and UNMOVING during my 5 minute demo. I never continue until everyone is perfectly still and focused on the demo.

  After the demo they return to their tables to create. I keep supplies on shelves I had made underneath the demo table in the center of the horseshoe work tables. Two students a month at each of the three tables take turns as monitors. They get and return supplies, as well as clean-up for the table. I refer to my tables as Table #1, Table #2, Table #3, although I really should designate famous artists names. Two long tables put together make up table #1, and so forth, with about 8 children per table in a horseshoe shape. I have clean-up down to 5 min.-still allows only 30 min. work time- not enough!

  I stick with this routine for K-5, and my classes practically run themselves...LOL...just how I like it...They know what to expect from me and they know what I expect of them. Kids need routine, but I know you know that, Sky, 'cause you are my New Jersey (or is it Penn. now) counterpart! We teach so similiarly. Are you going to National this year, Sky? Would love to see you again, it's been a while!
