Speaking of lucky to have the space...
Last year I had a leak in the ceiling that turned into a whole wall that
had to be replaced by year end. I had a great countertop and cabinets
attached to the wall and when the ceiling leaked it actually got
underneath part of the formica and caused it to bulge up in a place
along the back edge. They were going to have to replace the whole
countertop. THEN I had the great idea of just adding a new countertop
over the existing one. It was warped on the back edge, but with a new
one 6 inches higher than the old one, I would have 18 feet of new
counterspace and a new shelf where I could put my tubs of colored things
like markers, colored pencils, crayons, pastels. I can fit six boxes
each of all of my coloring media. No one can see the warped counter,
and I am HAPPPPPPPY! I also had them add a bookshelf at each end and
the center is now bulletin board. My drying racks and two bin storage
areas for two different classes are built into the cabinet area. I'll
take a picture of it if I remember to do it. It's a great use of space
that evolved because of a BIG LEAK!
