Native American Art Questions

Well...it is getting to be that time of year
again...The time to teach Native American art and
culture.

I'm thinking about having my students make their own
kind of Talking Stick to use when they have family
gatherings and such - using their own personal symbols
and colors. We will make a large one for the classroom
for when we have demonstrations and group discussions.

My questions:

Does anyone know if the Native Americans would view
this as disrespectful to their culture? I found
references to Talking Sticks in other cultures too.

Does anyone know what tribes began the use of Talking
Sticks? I found some by the Cherokee...and Northwest
coast. Anyone know where the practice originated?

I am only asking because I found that a lesson that
had been on KinderArt for talking sticks has since
been removed from the site. Any ideas why that might
be?

Many of you use the a koosh ball in your classes -- as
a "talking object" - Would it be better if I just
stuck with that idea? The Koosh ball is the same idea.

Anyone care to share your thoughts?

Joan Darcy
