My students know the differences between underglaze and gloss glaze in
terms of their physical properties such as surface texture, degree of
opacity and stability etc. What I don't know how to explain to them is
what ingredient(s) make the 2 different. In other words, what is the
basic chemical difference in the 2 types of glaze? Is there more silica
in the gloss glaze? I am not a chemist but I am always trying to
understand these things! I could use some help to make it clear to my
students-- Thank you to anyone who can shed some light on this--( I
have searched in books but haven't found a good answer).
