I would think the kaleidoscope would be from an invention or instrument point
of view. While the "still" design is like a mandela, the whole object of the
kaleidoscope is to use mirrors/optical effects to create the symmetrical
design. Also with a kaleidoscope, the design is constantly changing. You could
even incorporate a statistics lesson calculating the odds of having a specific
pattern repeat. In many ways, the artist has little control over the design
created by the kaleidoscope while having complete control over a mandela design.
