face jugs

I use face jugs in my 7th grade curriculum and have
used them with my Art I students also. For 7th grade
we use a soda can wrapped in newspaper to create the
main form. Slabs are rolled out to create the sides
and bottom. The can is removed before we leave them
out to dry after the features have been applied.
Sometimes the students will add feet and a lid. The
lid might be a hat or some elaborate hair. Even though
we all start with a cylinder- the finished works don't
look alike. For Art I (mainly 9th graders) We use 2
liter bottles to create the forms. With both classes I
spend a lot of time talking about how to create a
"dynamic" face not a "generic" face.

I always end up with some very strong work from this
lesson. I have used it since I began teaching with 7th
grade. It is one of those art traditions...the seventh
graders will always talk about their older siblings'
face cup. I don't use glazes. We paint.

If you are interested I can go into more detail. I
hope to have a web page launched soon.
