Melissa,
I know what you mean about getting roped into things as the ARt Teacher.
This is my first year teaching art and I've already been tapped to decorate
the stage for our winter program. The performing arts director has chosen
the theme "Paint the Town Christmas". The program director wants giant
paint brushes that look like they are painting a scenic view of downtown
Honolulu. She also wants some type of sparkle effect bouncing from the town
scene. After she finished describing her vision, she then threw in that
this was coming out of my budget...I just about had a heart attack! Anyway,
I'm looking recycling any all material I can find from the previous years
talent show and also hanging four fabric panels from the ceiling with black
fabric in between as a background. When you're working from no money you
pretty much have to use what you've got.
Anyway, getting back to your situation. Do you have a theme to work with?
It is much easier to work from a theme and then look around at what you can
reuse or modify. Another idea, not sure how cheap this is for you... but at
my daughter's school, one year they did a christmas tree theme. The whole
stage area was decorated with a christmas tree made from each grade level.
The trees crowded the stage but it really looked great. They also had stars
and snowflakes hanging from the ceiling over the tree area with lots of
white fluff at the base of each tree. A way of getting the students
involved is to ask if each grade level (or classroom) is willing to purchase
a tree (or if a parent has a plastic tree they can donate), whatever size
they want, then have each class come up with a christmas tree theme... maybe
based on their favorite christmas story. Work with each class on the
decorations, which are really cheap to make, and then set aside a day before
the program and have each class decorate their tree. Just a thought.
