It wasn't until my SECOND ceramics class in undergraduate school that I
learned about kilns and the chemistry of clay and glazes. We even learned
how to build kilns. I don't remember a lot of it, but It gave me confidence
when I ended up teaching high school ceramics for the first four years of my
teaching career. I'll tell you, though, at the time the information was
presented to me, I didn't feel I had to know all that stuff. It was very
uuh, let's say, dry.
