I am very excited about it! I have had 10 years of college art - 3
degrees in commercial, fine art and art ed - and somehow never took
ceramics?!
Hi, Lorene,
One of my pet peeves is that student teachers come to me with absolutely NO
knowledge on how to fire clay or even how to turn on a kiln. In ceramics they
learn how to throw a piece or two but no kiln education. I have had very
talented, intelligent, and wonderful student teachers from a variety of reputable
colleges, and they all are intimadated by the kiln. I don't understand why art
education for future art teachers does not include teaching the methods of
using the kiln! Is this a widespread practice at the colleges today?

I called Skutt when I first started teaching 14 years ago and they sent me
someone who showed me how to use the kiln. I would try calling the company for a
demo. I, too, who went to an art college and got a BFA in art ed.(o.k.-many
years ago- LOL- too many), took ceramics classes but was never taught firing
processes.
