Copper Tooling is actually a class at our school (taught through the Industrial Arts dept.). I had to pick up extra sections of the class and taught it for about 3 yrs. We use Liver of Sulpur to patina the copper. Students use steel wool to remove some of the patina and leave other parts depending on the effect they want. You can get some great colors (including pure black) depending on how long you leave the copper in the solution (about a teaspoon of Liver of sulpur to a quart of water. My school is 7th and 8th. The students dip their own copper. We have them wear goggles, but besides being REALLY stinky the Liver of Sulpur is quite safe.
