Peggy,
Perhaps the students identify so much with the products and their symbolic
value, that in some way they take the criticism personally, i.e., as a criticism
of their values and their symbolic attachments. At the middle school level,
the need for belonging definitely shows itself in attachments to products!
Just a thought.
