Since I am also a language arts teacher, I want to say that the "creative
childhood images" also disappear from writing about mid junior high - they
become more self conscious and lack spontaneity - especially older high
school students - there are exceptions but it is true. We are partly
responsible as we hammer away at essay form etc but the spark that is
there is there in childhood is rarely seen after 15.
