Today I decided to have the kids use Hurricane Isabel in a creative
way...since they are all fired up and excited about it anyway! We are maybe looking at
a potential landfall right in this area Wednesday night.
The students (I teach HS) have a daily warm-up that lasts about 10-15
minutes. I see them everyday for 90 minutes. I asked that since the hurricane has a
woman's name, what OTHER human attributes can they give her? We brainstormed
for a few minutes (she has an eye! Rage....strength, fury, violence etc.)
The kids really had fun with this. One student drew a really macho woman with
short hair and BIG arm muscles, with a tattoo that said "Die, NC!" Someone
else had a lineup of four men against a brick wall, with t-shirts that read
Florida, Georgia, SC, NC. A lady with long flowing hair was taking aim at NC.
Other depictions included cyclops-like winds and clouds with big pursed lips
blowing houses and trees and people around.
I loved it- isn't it great when we can take a 'moment' or an event or
anything topical, and turn it into a cathartic release and timely commentary or work
of art?!
