Hi fellow art teachers. I'm the one teaching K-5 after years of teaching
high school. I must tell you all that I love it. It's so rewarding. Aside from
the fact that I never get colds and have had one all weekend from the little
ones, I'm very excited about my new position. The looks of excitement when I
enter their rooms (art on a cart), the waves in the hall, knowing my name, and
loving art are so refreshing.

I guess the main problem I'm having is Kindergarten. They're so young. My
students are Spanish, about 10 % black and an occasional minority Caucasian
child. Most of them have not been to nursery school. In the 2 bilingual Spanish
classes the little ones really don't understand me. Think about yourself in
a room with someone talking in a language you don't know. Their regular
teacher speaks Spanish most of the time to them and she's not too supportive about
helping with their behavior. Besides, all art classes are once a week for 45
minutes each which I think is way too long. In the school where I live, art
for Kindergartners is twice a week for 25 minutes each. I got from the library
some cute books that relate to art to help me get through the time. Any help
from any elementary school art teachers would be welcomed?
Thanks, Eileen
