Hi All,

I also do radial designs with my 4th and 5th graders.
Cut out a circle, fold in half like a taco , in half like a slice of a quesadilla , in half like a small slice of pizza.
(so you end up with eighths)
1)We use pencil first to put the original design onto one wedge of the pie. I tell them 5 simple lines that either run from an edge to an edge. or that starts at a line and end at a line. (that way they get really great closed in shapes to fill in, and it keeps them from getting too complex in their first attempts.)

2) Then go over the lines in this first wedge with thick black crayon lines.

3) Fold the design in half so that your lines are not showing. The wedge with the lines should be on top of the wedge directly next to it.then using the plastic handle of CLOSED big scissors, they use friction (they learn about this principle in Science) to transfer their design to another wedge right next to the first one. They have to think a bit about this, and often say, "I can't figure this out" . But made to return to their seats and really think about it , they get it ! (ah ha !!)

4)Open and refold so that your design will transfer onto two empty wedges. Repeat rubbing, you may have to go over a few crayon lines as the crayon will transfer only a few times, and you want the lines to be nice and dark in the final process.

5) The completed design then gets filled in with colored pencil. They choose a theme such as complementary colors or warm or cool or they can apply the colors in a set pattern. One of the skills that I want them to experience, is that the application of colored pencils can be a bright vibrant medium. So often they will used them pale and sketchy. This assignment has a requirement of SOLID coloring. Nothing WIMPY !
Another example of this assignment can be seen the PAEA website Youth in Arts Month exhibit.

Hope this helps, Christine Besack :)
