favorite fancy projectMy fifth graders love to make their bas relief foil
coats of arms. It is a much anticipated project. We talk about the origins
of coats of arms and how it relates to the family. We talk about and look
at symbolism, then we design our own symbols and shields on paper. Next we
make our shield shape on mat board, cut it out, and cover that with tooling
foil. We put our drawing on top of the foil shield and trace it so that it
dents into the foil. After that we add textures and concave areas which, in
turn, create the relief areas. Finally we add color with Sharpies. We glue
it to a colored board and sometimes add scrolls, mottos, and other parts of
the achievement. Students also love their woven pillows and pillows sewn
from their own stencil printed fabric.
