When I was in college I made a life-sized (rather abstract) figure. I used
PVC pipe as the armature and plaster of paris (Dipped cloth into it) to build
the form. It held up great. It WAS messy and it was very heavy when done.
(i.e. very difficult to move around)

Anyhow... I mentioned it because PVC pipe is easy to cut and easy to hook
together with all the elbows and such you can buy. Not sure about glue... I know
the stuff I used was rather toxic.
