Our district contracts out for custodial help, which means we change custodians several times a year. So no matter what you tell the current custodian in the spring they will probably not share with their replacement. They have no pride in their work, they are underpaid, and they are generally of low intelligence. Back when we hired our own the custodian was a part of the staff and there was mutual respect all the way around. Frustrating.

I had the students do that last year and I told the custodian. He said wonderful, it will save him the trouble of having my room painted. I made him sware that I better not come back from summer break and find them painted over. He promised they wouldn't be. They weren't and it still looks good. I have turned it into a senior privilege.
I can only imagine your heartbreak when they had painted over yours.

I had had my students paint murals on my walls - my room was bright with color. The custodians decided to paint over them one summer, which I ranted and raved about all year. My new administrator walks into my room one day and casually mentioned how cool the artroom was at his old school because the students had painted the walls.
