Hi Eileen,
One project my fifth graders always loved doing was an enlargement of a
single comic cell from the Sunday funnies. We tied it in with a study of Roy
Lichtenstein (an OSU graduate and instructor, by the way) and his pop art
style of enlarging the benday dots (after a printer named Benjamin Day) used
in printing color in the comics, etc. The students learned to measure and
create a grid. We used black markers for outline and marker tips to "dot
in" the colors. They were encouraged to add to or delete portions of the
original cartoon, change colors and recreate any dialogue. The sound effects
were hypnotic and, I imagine for some, therapeutic. :-)

Besides, I have to follow the Science and Math teachers' curriculum since
we are a math and science magnet school. I'd like to set up a different
project for each of K-5th so next year I can reuse projects. The subject
matter is measurement of small, medium, and large. How about some help
teachers? I'd like some two week showy projects. Btw, I don't have a kiln.
Thanks, Eileen ---
