Well, maybe you can get them to call it something besides a war. ; - ).
The difficult thing will be "gluing" if you have metal mechanical parts. It
sounds like you will need glue that sets quickly and can hold weight. I'm just
assuming that as it sounds like a fast paced "retreat game." If the junk is
not heavy, they might be able to use hot glue- electricity available? Maybe
you can get wire/ twine to wire things together. Screws and bolts ?
Beyond actual assembly problems, do you have to establish the goals or the
objectives of the project? If teams know the goal, they're going to have an
easier time. Maybe you could have a picture of a famous sculpture and tell
students they should create an interpretation of it with the stuff they have.
Or they could pick a slip of paper out of a hat that tells the them the subject
or theme of their sculpture.
I think I'd require a certain amount of brain storm/ plan time before they
could touch the materials, and maybe assign roles and give guidelines to team
members because you want positive group work and they may not know how to do
that. And some rules can open up creative options- can they seek additional
materials? Do they have to use all the piece of junk or can they edit some
out?
