I do remember reading that not all shaving creams will work.
The one I used was Colgate (I couldn't find an unscented one,
but the Irish Spring scent was the least offensive. When I tried it,
I used full strength liquid watercolor (but I would think that diluted
watercolor would also work) and a skewer to make patterns.
