At the middle school I teach at we have a half hour midday study/club period
(3 days a week) for all grades. I hold a 7th grade art club and my
co-teacher does 8th. We treat our clubs as more of an enrichment period for
students who want more art than they can get in their regular schedule. We
try to do open ended projects that go beyond the scope of what we can do in a
class of 28 students. Some of the projects we have done are life size George
Segal-ish sculptures, "art" chairs (students scavenged for their own old
chair to work on) and hallway murals. Last year our 8th grade club
participated in a junior docent program at the Whitney museum that culminated
in an evening at the museum leading family and friends on tours of the
permanent collection and the Jacob Lawrence retrospective.

We don't do any fund raising as our Home School Association provides funds
for special supplies that we might need. We made the decision not to do
trips as students have many opportunities throughout the year for class
trips, including trips to museums. In the spring they are responsible for
making decorations for the 8th grade dinner dance.

As for names.....I haven't come up with a good one for my 7th graders
yet.....but the 8th grade calls itself Cre8 Art.

Hope this helps!
