encaustic in elementary?

Just wondering if anyone has some tips/suggestions in doing an encaustic
project with upper elementary grades...
I just moved into a room that has a great supply of cans of unwrapped
crayons separated by color...perfect for a project like encaustic...but
i'm not sure what the best way to heat/melt and apply the wax is...

any other suggestions on crayon projects BESIDES resist???
