Now I could keep my mouth shut and enjoy it but I know that it is not fair
so I am thinking of some ways to use that time.
welcome back carolyn. if you're talking about the last few days being slow
it could be the holiday. if longer, i think it's because everyone seems to
be starting at different times ...some started in mid august and some this
week. by this time next month we'll all have had time to catch a breath.
as to your question about extra preps, in my district we all have different
amounts of extra time. everyone (elem art) gets at least 2 planning periods
per week. if it works out that there are more than that we are expected to
fill them with what are called "enrichment" activities. this means we can
either take a whole class plus the teacher, or take half the class at a time
and leave the other half with the classroom teacher. i always ask the media
specialist to block out my enrichment periods in the computer lab schedule
so i can take the kids there. the trick for all of these is to get the
classroom teachers to give the kids up. it helps to buy into the
integration thing. i have more extra time than teachers who go to the
"trouble" of integrating extra art into their already busy schedules. but
you can do some really fun things, especially if you have a large block of
time at once. last year a 2nd grade teacher and i worked with her kids to
paint a life sized apatosaurus (science-dinosaurs; math-measuring). of
course it was humongous. we cut it out and (with the help of our really
great custodian) hung it on the gym wall. the whole building had a much
better idea about the size of dinos after that! anyhow, that's what i do
with my enrichment time.
