Krista,
Our library in Williamsburg, VA is an amazing place!
As part of the summer reading program which was based on a patriotic theme
they had each child trace his or her own hand on a piece of paper (red,
white, or blue) and write their first name on the palm. On a wall of the
library a temporary outline of the American flag was made using masking tape.
The children cut out the tracings of their hands and affixed them within the
borders of the outlined flag in the appropriate color areas. After all the
hands were placed the masking tape was then removed. The flag was a composite
of all the hands.
It is a simple idea with much positive symbolism on many levels.
