These are two good resources - developed in the mid 1970's by Benoit
Mandelbrot - It is a geometry that can analyze, quantify nature's irregular
patterns (clouds, mountain peaks, fern leaves...)
Not every irregular shape is a fractal - it must be self - similar
check for Mandelbrot sets...Julia sets... Hilbert curve... Koch's snowflake
or island..... Cantor dust...
